Still, they cannot be a lasting solution because the resulting mountains of lithium waste are hard to mitigate.

Israeli startup Nostromo Energy decided to meet that challenge by using an unlikely substance: water.

Doing so currently has major drawbacks: it is both time and energy intensive.

But now, researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa have taken a different path. They have identified new pathways that would speed up the catalytic process and reduce the required electrical energy costs significantly.

Their splitting process is assisted by solar energy, which is known scientifically by the term photoelectrochemistry, and lowers the amount of the invested electrical energy needed to break the chemical bonds in the water molecule to generate hydrogen and oxygen.

Oxygen evolution – the process of generating molecular oxygen (O2) by a chemical reaction, usually from water – requires the transfer of four electrons to create one oxygen molecule and then the addition of two hydrogen molecules to make water.

Oxygen evolution from water is carried out via oxygenic photosynthesis, which involves the electrolysis of water and the thermal decomposition of various oxides. This biological process supports aerobic life. When relatively pure oxygen is required industrially, it is isolated by distillation of liquefied air.

According to the current model, those electrons move one after the other in a sequence of four steps on an atomic reaction site that make the chemical reaction energetically difficult.

However, Israeli scientists showed – both theoretically and experimentally – a new paradigm where two electrons can simultaneously be transferred at different reaction sites, reducing the energy barriers for oxygen evolution.

Their findings were published in the top peer-reviewed journal in the field of sustainability, Energy & Environmental Science.

This new research changes the common understanding within the scientific community about the catalytic mechanism for oxygen evolution – a central and important reaction that represents a bottleneck in producing hydrogen from water. Just as the name implies, it will make traditional dairy without squeezing any udders or impregnating any cows. Its products are from microorganisms.

The Tel Aviv-based Imagindairy says the milk it produced would be identical to cow’s milk, but the cow, and her associated methane, would be replaced by fungi or other plant microorganisms programmed to produce milk proteins.

This process involves inserting DNA instructions for the production of whey and casein, the principal milk proteins, into the microorganisms. To turn the whey and casein proteins produced by the microorganisms into cow-free milk and dairy, Imagindairy will add plant-based fat, sugar, and water.

Methane-free cow’s milk will likely reduce the impact of climate change and deforestation significantly. The livestock rearing industry is responsible for about 32% of human-generated methane, mainly from the planet’s billion-plus cattle. Cutting methane emissions is thought to be the strongest lever available to slow climate heating over the next 25 years.

There are already huge numbers of alternative milk types on the market, and recent years have seen massive expansions in demand for oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, and other varieties, which make “milk” from other substitutes. But none of them can quite replace the taste of cows' milk for a milk-loving palate.

Agriculture companies working to produce animal-free fish, meat, and dairy substitutes have struggled to operate on a commercial scale. Imagindairy has developed a simpler way to isolate the milk proteins from the microorganisms that allows to scale up production much easier.

Imagindairy’s milk only requires 10% of the water needed to produce traditional cow’s milk and 1% of the land. The 1% includes the land needed to produce carbon and nitrogen sources to feed the microorganisms.

This could be a total game-changer; read more about it here.

Off to enjoy a glass of (almond) milk, till next time!

The company is making three more planes for a total of four aircraft to accelerate certification.

Alice is designed to accommodate nine passengers and two crew members. Once operational, it will make regional trips as accessible as a train ride, but at a lower cost and with better service. With a payload of 2,500 pounds (1.1 tons) and a range of 506 miles (815 kilometers), Alice would be available for passengers to book a ride by an app for popular short-haul routes — for example, San Jose to San Diego, London to Prague, and Paris to Toulouse.

The aircraft’s lithium-ion battery would require 30 minutes or less to charge per flight hour, as its mission is to make electric, zero-emission aviation a competitive, sustainable answer to on-demand mobility.

Eviation snagged its first client, Massachusetts-based regional airline Cape Air, in 2019 just as it unveiled its Alice prototype. Cape Air, which operates 95 fleets in some two dozen cities throughout the US and the Caribbean, placed an order for 92 Alice aircraft priced at $4 million each. Eviation then announced that two well-known but not-yet-disclosed American companies had also placed orders for the Alice, which now topped 150.

Last month, Eviation revealed that global logistics and international shipping giant DHL had placed an order for 12 Alice aircraft in cargo configuration, the Alice eCargo, to set up an electric DHL Express network for a pioneering step into a sustainable aviation future. Eviation provides a credible operational solution for cargo operations; Alice can be charged while loading and unloading for maximum use on short hauls.

Alice has low maintenance and operating costs, and it is expected that the aircraft will reduce carrier costs by up to 70 percent. A strong bonus is how much quieter electric planes are.

By the time the Alice planes go into service in 2024, pending all regulatory approval, electric aircraft fleets will be much more common because they don’t need as much infrastructure as electric cars.

Once there are final approvals, the rollout is expected to be rapid in the US, and then globally.

Eviation has attracted its fair share of attention in recent years, nabbing a spot on TIME magazine’s list of 100 “best inventions” two years ago (alongside eight other Israeli-founded companies), and winning a “World-Changing Ideas” Award in 2018 by US business magazine Fast Company. The company intends to remain a plane manufacturer and has no plans to become a fleet operator or a logistics provider.

Source: The Times of Israel
Zoyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08231587004826378149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8726036525037250687.post-53070401071010439522021-07-19T14:50:00.001-04:002021-07-26T07:12:29.891-04:00Israel Seeks to Tax Disposables to Reduce Plastic Use

In a serious bid to counter all the plastic littered everywhere, Israel intends to impose a steep purchase tax on plastic utensils. It will enable electric buses capable of being charged directly from under-road electric infrastructure to travel on the route serving passengers traveling to and from Tel Aviv University.

The municipal policy of Tel Aviv-Yafo attaches great importance to electric vehicles reducing air pollution and noise in the city. The construction of electric roads will encourage energy-independent public transportation and promote the adoption of innovative initiatives and technologies in various other fields.

The construction of an electric road to charge public transportation vehicles while traveling will make Tel Aviv-Yafo the first city worldwide to roll out this technology on a wide scale. In doing so, the city will evaluate the viability of adding distribution trucks, as well as private and autonomous vehicles.

Constructing electric roads in Tel Aviv-Yafo will position the State of Israel as a global leader in the field.

If the pilot is successful, it may be expanded to additional locations in the city.

Transforming a road into an electrified surface and a means for charging, through advanced and effective infrastructure, will enable the acceleration of the transition to electric buses. As the global coronavirus health crisis continues to grip the world, medical professionals around the world emphasize the importance of good hand hygiene that is based on regular and thorough cleaning hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand rub.

The ongoing pandemic has led to a surge in demand for alcohol-based disinfectants in the form of hand sanitizer.

Ethanol has mainly been generated from sugar cane and corn, a “first-generation” process because it is directly taking the food to generate fuel.

As a small country, Israel currently has no ethanol industry. It is because Israel does not have the water, the land or the capacity to grow huge fields of corn or sugar cane, like in the US or Brazil.

Israel is completely dependent on the annual import of tens of thousands tons of ethanol. As the crisis continues, concerns have emerged of shortages of hand sanitizer in Israel as a result of quarantine conditions in other states, global demand, and import limitations.

For the first time, a groundbreaking development from Tel Aviv University researchers enables the local production of ethanol in Israel, from plant and paper waste, in a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way.

The process, which uses a novel lignin degradation method could significantly cut back on production costs and lead to a decrease in the use of edible plant sources, help protect the environment, reduce the use of various pollutants, and greenhouse gas emissions, due to environmental-friendly waste processing.

Lignin is a complex macromolecule important for the formation of cell walls of plants. It exists in all types of agricultural waste.

This novel process is a game-changer in the way that ethanol would be manufactured in Israel and remote countries where the production of ethanol is difficult.

The team at TAU has been working on the process of recycling waste and converting it into ethanol for the past five years, but the development of local ethanol production has become more significant with the prevalence of COVID-19.

But the generation of bioethanol from waste might prove to be the answer to this problem. Production of ethanol from waste is a “second-generation” process as does not require fertilizers or monoculture planting that has many environmental issues.

The joint TAU and University of Haifa teams have developed an effective pre-treatment method that dramatically reduces pollution, doesn’t require the use of hazardous substances, and ends up being less costly and less complex.

The TAU team will soon begin a pilot program using agricultural waste to create ethanol at the Yehuda Naftali Botanic Garden at Tel Aviv University. The garden will give the team their tree trimmings, grass, plants, and other waste. The project will take about two years to complete, similar to the amount of time it could take to commercialize the process.

This isn’t the only study or method currently in development to produce ethanol from waste. In a separate study, researchers from the University of Haifa also examined the possibility of producing ethanol from watermelon pulp. The study found that the fruit residue can be used to produce ethanol, an alternative biological fuel for vehicles, which is also the main ingredient in alcohol.

Currently, some 620,000 tons of plant and similar waste and 35,000 tons of paper waste - waste that requires management and resources - are produced annually in Israel.
The fashion industry uses up 20% of the world's water and then dumps it back into waterways as wastewater. To make just one kilo of dyed thread, 70 kilos of water are required. This process creates enough wastewater to fill 2 million Olympic-sized swimming pools every year.

Enter Twine, an Israeli startup that dyes threads digitally, operating the same way that a color printer works on paper.

Currently, threads are dyed in Asia, using up a lot of water, and then shipped to various Western countries for approval, and then shipped back to Asia for production. Just the shipping alone creates a large carbon footprint.

Twine not only obviates the need for this cumbersome and wasteful process, but it will also revolutionize the entire industry, changing the way clothes, shoes, upholstery, and so much more are manufactured.
It is not a widely known fact, but fashion is one of the most polluting industries.

Producing a single pair of jeans emits as much greenhouse gas as driving a car for over 80 miles. A single cotton shirt takes 2,700 liters of water to produce, equivalent to the average person’s drinking needs for two and a half years. And clothes made of non-biodegradable fabrics will sit in landfills for more than 200 years.

When we think of plastic, and the destruction plastic causes, synthetic fibers are not usually even considered, though they contribute a great deal.

A 2017 International Union for Conservation of Nature report estimated about 35 percent of the microplastics that enter the ocean come via synthetic textiles.

Israeli brand Tooshaaya is dedicated to the cause of sustainable fashion.

All Tooshaaya fabrics come from nature and are biodegradable. Most are plant-based rather than animal-derived.

Many Tooshaaya garments are made from bamboo and soy yarns, “vegan silk”. Bamboo yarn is extremely sustainable since bamboo grows very fast and does not require that much water. The fabric also has a special tactile quality that makes clothing breathable with a lot of thermal control. Bamboo is perfect for the desert climate of Israel because it can be worn when it’s hot during the day and when it’s cold at night.

Another textile Tooshaaya designers works with is “vegan cashmere.” It is made of soy waste from the tofu industry and shells of edamame combined with cotton and recycled into yarn.

Both bamboo and soy are hypoallergenic and antibacterial, which makes them perfect for sensitive skin.

All of Tooshaaya’s clothes are knitted using a handloom, in keeping with the company’s vision of helping to bring back respect for handcrafts and to make people more mindful of their purchases.

To foster these values, Tooshaaya encourages its clients to bring clothing back for repairs by limiting the charge to the cost of materials only. It has also started making videos so people can repair their own items at home.

To ensure that customers do not discard its pieces after a single season, Tooshaaya focuses on styles that are timeless rather than trendy.

Going vegan has been a popular recent trend, with many making the change due to environmental issues. However, we often do not think of the effect our clothes have on the environment. Whether you are vegan or not, it is a good time to think about the environmental consequences your next fashion purchase will have.
Try to picture it -- a microplastics researcher moves to Israel, is disturbed by all the litter she finds on the beach, looks to join a beach cleanup, and can't seem to find one.

So, what does one do in this case? In true Israeli fashion, she took matters into her own hands.

“It took me about two months to organize my own cleanup, which was in March of 2018. I advertised it on Facebook and Instagram. In the end, 12 people showed up,” recalls Stav Friedman, an American-born research assistant at the Medical Research Council Centre for Environment and Health’s Microplastics Lab at King’s College London’s School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences.

This small group became the starting point for Plastic Free Israel, which seeks to minimize the use of plastics among Israelis. It's since evolved into a grassroots movement with monthly beach cleanups in various locations around Tel Aviv.

Plastic production and consumption are at an all-time high, with most of it ending up in landfills instead of being recycled. And over 250,000 tons of it are floating around in the ocean.

In her research, Friedman studies the effect of microplastics on the environment, noting that it's made its way into the water we drink and the food we eat.
The Israeli government announced on Tuesday that it would no longer issue permits for oil shale exploration, a move that was welcomed by environmentalists. The decision applies to both drilling, as well as open cast mining.

The decision came in light of the government's commitment to clean energy.

Existing licenses will not be renewed, and any future license requests would be judged by environmental criteria drawn up by the Environmental Protection Ministry.

The Society for the Protection of Nature, which has campaigned to have oil shale stopped, welcomed the decision, saying the industry caused “serious environmental harm, which has no place in Israel.”

Environmentalists in Israel still feel that the government needs to go further and ban any such licenses, no matter the circumstances.

Oil shale is considered the dirtiest kind of oil that exists, polluting not only as a finished product, but in the entire process of extraction.
The Haifa Center for German and European Studies at Haifa University recently held its first conference on decarbonization in Germany and Israel.

Given the record-breaking nature of the conference, a large number of experts showed up to participate and share decarbonization approaches.

Israel and Germany have vastly different environments, but they're eager to help one another work towards a common goal of fighting carbon emissions in the atmosphere. It's an issue that will affect the entire world, so both sides see it as crucial to work together on this issue.

Germany is a pioneer in the field of decarbonization, and German experts in this field have come to realize that simply transforming the energy market will not be enough to meet their Paris Protocol targets. What's required are cultural and societal reforms. Climate change is not merely an environmental problem; it's a cultural challenge.

Israel falls behind Germany in renewable energy, largely due to the cost of energy being much lower in Israel. The high costs in Germany have required the nation to come up with alternatives.

But Germany is lagging much farther behind Sweden, which puts the efficiency of Germany's practices into question.

Being in the desert, Israel has its own challenges with climate change.

Both countries aspire to come up with new and more effective initiatives, so they've chosen to come together and learn from each other.
Urban trees don’t just improve aesthetics and offer cooling shade and better air quality. Recent research has shown that they also have lesser-known benefits, such as reduction in childhood obesity rates, better mental health (decrease of cognitive fatigue, stress, and feelings of anger, depression, or anxiety), noise reduction, and stronger social cohesion and community empowerment. Unfortunately, maintenance costs and price of water supply limit availability of urban vegetation, especially in low-income neighborhoods.

Israeli start-up FrizWeed helps address both problems by introducing their latest invention – TreeTube, a modular root structure system designed to enable the growth of healthy trees in urban environments.
Could a water weed, generally considered a fast-breeding, invasive nuisance in freshwater be the world's next superfood?

A team of researchers from Ben Gurion University found that mankai, a form of duckweed, can control blood sugar levels, especially after someone chowed down a hefty dose of carbs.

A study conducted by offering participants a mankai-laden shake vs a regular shake, containing yogurt, but having an otherwise identical nutritional profile, showed serious potential for controlling blood glucose levels, and providing more satiety for the mankai-drinking group.

Mankai duckweed is grown in Israel, in a controlled environment. It's also highly sustainable, as it requires a fraction of the amount of water to produce each gram of protein compared to soy, kale or spinach. It can be grown year-round hydroponically. It has no taste or odor, so it's easily integrated into recipes.

It's also high in protein, polyphenols, dietary fibers, minerals (including iron and zinc), vitamin A, vitamin B complex and vitamin B12, which is rarely produced by plants.
Do you eat like an Israeli?

A better question is--how often do you eat your vegetables, and what goes in your salad?

An in-depth study, taken last year of people living in 187 countries found that Israelis are some of the world's healthiest eaters.

Israelis got quizzed by their government about the fruit and veggie consumption.

A whopping 4 out of 5 Israelis said that they eat fruits and vegetables nearly every day.

Israelis especially love tomatoes and lettuce, ranking their eating habits as the 9th healthiest diet in the world.

Israeli also ranked 3rd in the OECD nations in terms of vegetable consumption.

In a world where trees are being cut down to make room for cattle grazing, emitting greenhouse gases in an era where the earth is overheating, nothing could be better for the earth, not just Israelis, than planting and eating more fruits and veggies.
Solar cell printing technology start-up Utilight is looking to kill two birds with one stone--they're bringing much need manufacturing and jobs to the hard hit communities on the Gaza border.

They're also bringing eco-friendly technology to a region that desperately needs it.

Founded in 2009, Utilight has developed game-changing laser printing technology to manufacture superior, cheaper and lighter solar cells, which improved energy harvesting.

To promote their game-changing technology, the company created a new business model by developing its own brand of solar panels, called SilverLight – manufacturing cells with less silver that harvest more light.

The expected explosive growth in the near future of the solar panel industry makes Utilight's solutions perfect for war-ravaged communities close to Gaza's border.

Utilight has already made its way into the Chinese and Australian market, making Israel a front runner in the global surge.
